John Nix and Don Hoover started their careers together over 10 years ago. They met while working for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. The OSBI was a colorful place that began in 1925. It is one of the original state law enforcement agencies and is responsible for the capture and assisted capture of many of our country's most notorious outlaws. While working together the two of them handled hundreds of criminal, civil, and appellate cases together. More importantly, they developed a sincere trust and friendship for one another that continually attributes to both of their success today.

John pursued a career with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation because his desire was always to be a criminal lawyer. The Bureau was a unique place because it gave John an in-depth look at how police work should be handled and performed with the highest degree of professionalism. To be an agent, you have to have a college degree and you had to have had a clean and extensive street career as a regular police officer. It also allowed him to build relationships throughout Oklahoma with different prosecutors, judges, and defense lawyers. Lastly, the Bureau experience allowed John to have an extensive look at how a crime lab needs to be operated and how evidence should be handled. It was an unbelievable experience for a developing attorney and gave both John and Don a good example of how law enforcement should conduct themselves.

After John's father died he decided to move back to Texas to be closer to family and it was then that he secured a position with the Grayson County District Attorney's Office. The experience finalized John's view into the criminal justice system because he learned to understand how a prosecutor looks at a client's case. He learned to handle and try different types of criminal cases, and he gained the opportunity to work extensively with the different Court's in Grayson County. It also taught him what it took to be an effective criminal defense attorney and to understand how to communicate with prosecutors in a language they understand and respect.

When Don left the OSBI he did so in order to pursue a civil litigation career. He went to work for Don Pope and Associates in Norman Oklahoma. Don Pope was the former General Counsel for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections and because of Don's experience at the OSBI it was a nice fit. The State of Oklahoma and many private interests used Pope and Associates to represent correctional facilities and inmates alike in every realm of the civil arena. Correctional facilities are continually wrapped up in litigation involving construction disputes of their facilities, personal injuries of employees and inmates, and all aspects of employment law. The experience also allowed him to be involved in the drafting and assessment of large private and governmental contracts. Lastly, it gave Don the opportunity to represent numerous inmates in post conviction appeals before numerous Federal, District and Appellate Courts.

Ambition got the best of both attorney's and each decided to go into private practice for themselves. John started his office in Sherman in 2001 and Don started his office in 2005.

Ever since 2001 John has pursued criminal defense, immigration, and family law. However, in 2005, Don, a 21 year Marine was called to fight in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He sacrificed his law practice as a result of his service. Upon his return, he was recruited by the Oklahoma Attorney General's Office representing the State of Oklahoma in complex litigation matters across the Oklahoma, the United States, and World. In 2006, however, John convinced Don to move to Sherman and start what is now Nix and Hoover. Let our experience and unique work relationship work for you.
